Today my student helpers were in over lunch recess. They are six in number, in grade 5. I call them the speedy six because they work so quickly, and with such unbridled enthusiasm. They talk to each other as they work, and they help each other do a good job. They love to be able to help out and we have an enjoyable work time together.
My experience has been the the junior aged students, grades 4-6 are very enthusiastic about helping. Some of the older kids in grades 7 and 8 get a bit distracted and forget to come or they cancel out without notice.
